HMS Ark Royal (reg. 91) was a British aircraft carrier launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1938. She was the third ship of the Royal Navy to bear that name and the first to be designed and built from the outset as an aircraft carrier with integral hangars and a flight deck.
Significance: She played a crucial role in several major operations of World War II, such as the pursuit of the German battleship Graf Spee and, most notably, the operation against Bismarck, where her aircraft (mainly Fairey Swordfish) destroyed the German ship's rudder, leading to its eventual sinking.
Fate: Sunk by a German submarine (U-boat) in the Mediterranean in November 1941.
Subsequent ships: This was followed by two other aircraft carriers with the same name (Ark Royal R09 and Ark Royal R07), the latter being of the Invincible class and decommissioned in 2011.
