The Type VII U-boats were German submarines whose construction began in 1936. The length of the Type VII units, depending on the subtype, ranged from 64.5 m to 77.6 m, the width from 5.85 m to 7.3 m, and the submerged displacement - from 725 tons to 1181 tons. The maximum surface speed of the Type VII U-boats was about 17 knots and the maximum submerged speed was about 8 knots. The main armament was 5 torpedo tubes of 533 mm with a total of 11-16 torpedoes carried on board. The secondary armament consisted of 1 88 mm gun, 1 20 mm anti-aircraft gun or 1 37 mm gun and 2 twin 20 mm guns on VII D and VII F.

The Type VII U-boats were the mainstay of the German armament in the Battle of the Atlantic and created the series with the most submarines produced in naval history! Several subtypes of this class of ships were created during serial production. Chronologically, the first was the Type VII A, which was created on the basis of the Type III U-boat dating back to the First World War. Initially, it had only 4 torpedo tubes, but its design characteristics were very good - for example, it could sink very quickly. Another type was the Type VII B, which carried more spare torpedoes and had a smaller underwater turning radius. It also had a modified steering system. The most frequently produced was the Type VII C, which was equipped with active sonar, but also had a greater maximum depth of immersion and in the early versions of this subtype - a significantly increased range (on the surface to about 16,300 km ). The next version was the Type VII D, which operated as a minelayer. The last to enter service was the Type VII F, which was designed as a torpedo boat by adding a special compartment behind the conning tower. However, due to changes in the realities of combat in the Atlantic and the shortening of the patrol range of other U-boats, the Type VII F was used as a submarine transport. Between 1936 and 1945, approximately 700 submarines of this type were built.
