The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG‑17 is a Soviet single-engine, mid‑wing, all‑metal jet fighter with swept wings and a conventional tail, known by its NATO codename “Fresco.” The prototype made its first flight in January 1950. The MiG‑17 was developed as an evolution of the MiG‑15 design. The improvements focused on a new engine (Klimov WK‑1F), better aerodynamics, and the addition of radar in one of its development variants.

Several main versions of the aircraft were created. The first mass-production version was the MiG‑17F. Another radar-equipped variant was the MiG‑17PF, while the MiG‑17PFU was capable of guiding missiles using its onboard radar. The aircraft was also produced under license in countries such as Poland and China. In Poland, serial production began in 1956 under the designation Lim‑5, with an additional attack version developed, the Lim‑6bis.

The MiG‑17 is still in service with the air forces of Mali and North Korea.
