The DHC-1 Chipmunk was created in response to a request by the Royal Canadian Air Force for a modern, monoplane training aircraft intended to replace the Tiger Moth series, which had become outdated after 1945. Despite the short research and development period, a very successful aircraft was produced—highly maneuverable, capable of basic aerobatics, and exceptionally reliable. For the Canadian Air Force, it represented a major qualitative leap compared to the Tiger Moth!
Several versions of the aircraft were developed during serial production. The first mass-produced version was the DHC-1A-1, also known as the Chipmunk T.1. The DHC-1B-1 and DHC-1B-2 variants were also created, adapted for air shows. The license for the DHC-1 was also purchased by Great Britain, where the aircraft was built under the name Chipmunk.
DHC-1 aircraft were also sold to many countries, including Belgium, Burma, Egypt, Israel, and Portugal.
