The Northrop F-5 is a lightweight, inexpensive, and simple supersonic fighter designed in the 1960s. It was initially built in single-seat (F-5A) and two-seat (F-5B) versions. It is characterized by its light weight, two small engines with a good thrust-to-weight ratio, simple electronics, and easy maintenance — features that made it reliable and popular as an export aircraft. It was developed into later versions (Tiger II — F-5E/F) and there were many modernization options (radar, HUD, modern navigation/weapons systems, more powerful engines). The F-5 served as a reliable trainer and fighter aircraft, especially for countries with limited budgets.
