Apart from being brothers, Peter and Ivan Kubek seem to have little in common.
Peter is a Dublin lawyer, thirty-something, successful, worthy and seemingly invulnerable. But after the death of their father, he needs sleeping pills to sleep and struggles to manage his relationship with two very different women – his eternal first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a student who sees life as one big joke.
Ivan is a professional chess player, twenty-two years old. He has always considered himself socially awkward, a loner, the opposite of his charming and popular older brother. Going through the first weeks of mourning, Ivan meets his older sister Margaret, who carries her own turbulent past, and they connect instantly and intensely.
