The English Electric Lightning is a British twin‑engine supersonic fighter aircraft. The first flight of the F.1 version took place in 1960, and of the F.2 version four years later. The Lightning is characterized by its unusual engine arrangement, with the two engines mounted vertically, one above the other. Its highly distinctive wing shape and the absence of flaps are also unique features.

The aircraft was powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon 302 engines producing 7,260 daN with afterburner each. The prototype for the serial Lightning was the P.1B. From 1960, shortly after the first flight of the finalized version, the aircraft began entering service with RAF squadrons.

In total, 338 aircraft of this type were produced in six different versions:

  • Interceptor: F.1, F.1A

  • Fighter‑bomber: F.53

  • Trainer/combat trainer: T.4, T.5, T.55

The aircraft failed to attract any European customers, but it was exported to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. RAF Lightning units remained in service until the 1980s.

These aircraft were equipped with the Ferranti AI Mk.23 AIRPASS radar, and their primary armament consisted of Firestreak or Red Top infrared air‑to‑air missiles, complemented by two 30 mm cannons.

  • Maximum speed: 2415 km/h

  • Maximum range: 1290 km

  • Armament:
