The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most recognizable, powerful, and stable American fighter aircraft of World War II. It remained in service for many years, including the Korean War.
General Characteristics
Role: Fighter aircraft, fighter-bomber.
Manufacturer: Designed by Vought, but production was expanded to other companies such as Goodyear (as FG).
Engine: It had the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp steroid engine, which gave it excellent performance and was the fastest aircraft carrier aircraft of its time.
Wing Design: Its most distinctive feature was the inverted "W" (or "gull") wing. This design was necessary to provide sufficient ground clearance for the large four-blade propeller, without requiring excessively long landing legs
